Back To Nature: Explore Mexico’s Sian Ka’an Biosphere
Thursday, January 10th, 2008Sian Ka’an means”Origin of the Sky”. Of Mexico’s twenty-seven UN World Heritage sites, Sian Ka’an Biosphere stands apart as the most beautiful and diverse. This ecological park spans 1.3 million acres and features forests, lagoons, wetlands and marine habitats. It is Mexico’s largest protected marine area and forms one of the few Yucatan peninsula natural treasures which tourists can access.
Sian Ka’an Biosphere is home to rich and varied flora and fauna and over three hundred species of wild birds. An array of tours, fishing excursions, accommodations, and other activities offered there fund the center. An educational ecotourism center serves as a model for sustainable development in fragile tropical ecosystems. The center makes use of rainwater collection and solar and wind power. It also provides education and opportunities for biological research.
